- Shorter terms and tours of service are increasing turnover of personnel
- There are particular health stressors unique to developing countries where a large number of UK based personnel are working.
- Cultural transition is one of the most serious psychological stressors, while Humanitarian workers and their locations are at increasing risk from violence and terrorism
- Premature termination of contract and early return is often traumatizing for the individual and has serious financial implications for the sending agency. This may be as high as 15%.
- We believe that personal review in a neutral setting is frequently helpful and that personnel may need formal counselling to adequately resolve their issues.

During the Selection Process
- Full medical and psychological assessment.
- Identify any potential medical problems, preventing crises later on.
- Teaching on how best to manage healthcare in the intended place of work.
- Provide location-specific health advice on vaccines, anti-malarials or other relevant medications.
- Bring greater understanding of strengths and weaknesses and their impact on the individual, team or the work in the new situation.
- Provide information on how best to support partners / family / colleagues.
- Alert clients to ways of coping with the stresses of a new environment.

During home leave
- We recommend a full medical review and personal debrief for the whole family
- There can be particular stresses in readjusting to home culture and alteration in role.
- Some people after initial debrief opt to return for more in depth counselling.
- Young people growing up in a different ‘home culture' can find this a difficult time. Both individual and family support can be offered.
- Our team is skilled in dealing with children and we have found that even quite young children (age 8 upwards) also enjoy and benefit from their own opportunity for ‘talk time'
